BH | Studio Båstad Button-Tufted Velvet Twin Bed

Deep buttoning, upholstery pulled down into a grid of buttons so the padding swells in between, came into its own in nineteenth-century drawing rooms once coil springs made it practical, and nailhead trim, brass-headed tacks fixing cloth to a frame, is older still. Set both on a scalloped, arching headboard and the result has the glamour of the 1930s, the decade when Båstad, on Sweden's west coast, drew royalty and summer society to its tennis courts.

The headboard rises in a shapely arched crest with curving shoulders, its centre deeply button-tufted and its outline traced in silver nailheads. Everything is covered in a stain-resistant performance velvet in bright white, soft to lean against when reading in bed. Underneath, a sturdy wood slat platform with a reinforced centre beam and two extra support legs takes the place of a box spring and suits memory foam, innerspring, latex or hybrid mattresses. Black-finished wood legs, capped so they will not mark the floor, lift the frame, which is rated to hold 800 lbs. Assembly is required.

It makes a storybook bed for a child's room and a romantic one for a guest room. White velvet reads fresh and a little regal: pair it with blush or lilac bedding, a ruffled sham, a painted or mirrored bedside table and a crystal lamp, against walls in pale pink, sage or soft blue. This listing is for the bed frame only; mattress and bedding are not included.
