BH | Studio Hexham Canopy King Bed

The four-poster bed began in the medieval and Tudor bedchamber, where a wooden canopy, the tester, carried heavy curtains against winter drafts and gave privacy in houses where few rooms were private. The open-frame canopy bed keeps that architecture, four tall posts joined overhead, and makes the drapery a choice.

Here the frame is sized for a standard king mattress, and the wider span makes the canopy all the more commanding. Posts, rails and headboard are kiln-dried solid wood, dried before machining so it holds its shape, finished in Cocoa, a smoky brown deep enough to read almost black from across the room, or in Honey. The wood panel headboard is built into the frame behind the pillows. Wood slats hold the mattress on their own, with no box spring needed, and the frame is rated to 800 lbs. Levelers under each foot adjust to steady the bed on uneven boards. Assembly is required.

In a large bedroom with high ceilings, a king canopy gives the bed the presence the room needs. Try it in a loft or a converted barn, where the posts echo exposed beams, or in a city apartment where the frame brings a sense of enclosure. Either finish pairs well with oatmeal linen, a sheepskin over the end, aged brass lamps and a deep green wall; or keep things spare with white walls and one large abstract canvas. This listing is for the bed frame only; mattress and bedding are not included.
