BH | Studio Sturbridge Corner-Post Velvet Queen Bed

The low-post bed, its four corner posts stopping well short of a canopy, was the everyday bed of nineteenth-century New England, and you can still see plain examples in the farmhouse bedrooms preserved at Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. Pad the posts and cover the frame in velvet, as the upholstered bedrooms of the 1930s did, and the old form turns warm and quietly modern.

A queen bed with a tall padded headboard and a lower footboard, each flanked by rounded upholstered posts that stand to the floor and frame the bed like columns. It is covered in performance velvet in Cream, Truffle, Claret or Fawn, a fabric made to resist stains. Wood slats support any standard queen mattress and keep air moving underneath, so no box spring is needed. The frame is rated to hold 800 lbs. Assembly is required.

Make it the centerpiece of the main bedroom, or of a generous guest room. The headboard is high and padded enough to lean against for reading or breakfast in bed. The velvet is calm and luminous: layer white percale, a cream matelassé coverlet and a sheepskin at the foot, add mirrored bedside tables and glass lamps, and keep the walls pale. It also softens a modern room with concrete or dark wood floors. This listing is for the bed frame only; mattress and bedding are not included.
