BH | Studio Sturbridge Corner-Post Velvet Twin Bed

The low-post bed, its four corner posts stopping well short of a canopy, was the everyday bed of nineteenth-century New England, and you can still see plain examples in the farmhouse bedrooms preserved at Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. Pad the posts and cover the frame in velvet, as the upholstered bedrooms of the 1930s did, and the old form turns warm and quietly modern.

This twin-size frame has a padded headboard and a lower padded footboard, each held between a pair of rounded upholstered posts that run to the floor and give the bed its architectural outline. Everything is covered in a performance velvet in Cream, Truffle, Claret or Fawn, a fabric made to resist stains, which matters in a child's room. Wood slats carry the mattress and let air move beneath it, so no box spring is needed, and it works with most mattress types. The frame is rated to 800 lbs, and assembly is required.

Give it to a child's bedroom, a small guest room or a college dorm, where the tall headboard is good for propping up with a book before lights out. In Cream the velvet keeps a small room light: dress it with a white quilt, a gingham sham and a wool throw, with a painted bedside table and a scalloped lamp beside it. This listing is for the bed frame only; mattress and bedding are not included.
