BH | Studio Voss 12-Light Wood Chandelier

The great halls of the Middle Ages were lit by wooden chandeliers, rings or crosses of timber bound with iron and set with candles, hung on a rope or chain so they could be lowered for lighting. The form never lost its appeal in country houses, barns and taverns, where timber and wrought iron feel right overhead.

This is a large two-tier chandelier made of curved staves of solid hardwood in a distressed, weathered finish, gathered by bands of dark steel into a basket shape that narrows at the waist and swells at the base. Twelve curving arms in two rings hold candle-style sockets, and a steel ball hangs from the bottom as a finial. The steel frame hangs from an adjustable steel chain, so the drop can be set to suit the ceiling height. It takes twelve E12 candelabra bulbs at 25 watts each (bulbs not included), is UL listed, and requires assembly.

Its scale wants a big room: a double-height living room, a dining room with a long farmhouse table, a great room in a lake or ski house, a stairwell, or a converted barn. Twelve small lights give a soft, candle-like glow that flatters wood beams and stone. Pair it with a reclaimed wood table, leather or rush-seat chairs, iron candlesticks and linen in oatmeal. This listing is for one chandelier.
